What's the difference between reflux and regurgitation? It's so easy to understand! :)

imagine the stomach as a soda bottle with the straw coming out the top (the esophagus).

Reflux is the bubbling of the soda in the bottle a little bit into the straw. Bubble Bubble Bubbly BURN. That definitely sucks.

Regurgitation is when the contents of the soda bottle pop out the top of the straw. Acid, Bile, Food Contents can reflux and burn the esophagus. Acid, Bile, and Food Contents can also come back out the persons mouth (regurgitation).

---------------------
That didn't help? Lets consider two different diseases.

In GERD, reflux and rergurgitation really mean the same thing.

In a ZENKERS DIVERTICULUM, the lower esophageal sphincter works, there is no acid backwash, there is no bubbling out, there is NO REFLUX. However, that undigested piece of steak can end up on the old man's pillow at night. There IS REGURGITATION.
